Artist's Statement

Looking at the landscape from different perspectives—up at the sky, through the branches of trees, or down at the mountains below—leads me to explore patterns of shape and color. Whether from the surroundings of parks, forests, and beaches; the houses of a Spanish village; or the rolling hills of Tuscany, I am interested in conveying my sense of a place through simplifying and abstracting from natural and manmade forms and finding their rhythms. I am especially interested in trees and their interconnectedness, and I have created a substantial body of work exploring their relationships. These works can be viewed on the Trees, Branches, and Flowers page on this website.

I make sketches and take photographs on-site as a basis for working in the studio and finding variations on a theme to create a series of works. I use paper or board as my support and am interested in the effects of different media on the smooth surface. I began painting with oil “en plein air” and later became interested in mixed media. I layer acrylic with charcoal, ink, or crayon; gouache with watercolor or pencil; and acrylic paint with collage, using the opaque or transparent qualities of the media to create the pattern and rhythm of each individual work.
